Eight Months

We are officially two-thirds of the way through Waylon's first year. Things are slowing down and we're not seeing the massive changes each day, but Waylon still keeps things hopping. The big event this month was Waylon's scooching forward. He is really starting to motor pretty quickly and can get across the room, but he is usually distracted along the way by fun and exciting toys such as plastic hangers or my shoes (of course he loves these things much better than his actual toys). Waylon also got his 2 top teeth this month and is enjoying mommy and daddy's startled reactions when he chomps into us. Sadly, it already looks like Waylon will be dentally-challenged. We keep joking that his teeth look like an Englishman's and he'll probably talk with a Cockney accent to match his chompers. We are considering starting an orthodontia fund rather than a college fund.

The new teeth caused other challenges, and when they were coming through it caused some night wakings, but that seems to be under control...for now. Waylon sleeps about 10 to 11 hours at night and still takes 3 naps, which are usually pretty short. The problem is that between his feedings and 3 naps, its impossible to leave the house without disrupting his routine. Thus, its time for us to push towards 2 longer naps--but that is probably easier said than done, especially with daylight savings coming this weekend. Whoever decided to screw with the clocks by an hour twice a year clearly did not have an infant at home.

As for his eating, Waylon eats much better than his parents and only has organic vegetables and oatmeal. He eats pretty well, but did not initially like avocado. I was devastated that my son might not like guacamole. However, he seems to be developing a taste for it afterall.

Its fun to see Waylon's personality come out. He is just starting to get a little upset if you take away something he enjoys playing with (like electrical cords or sharp objects). He is a pretty fun little guy when he is not constipated, teething, or tired. We always love visitors, and Waylon usually gets over his stranger anxiety pretty quickly. Please come visit soon!

This is Waylon's super model pose. He does it all the time, and often adds a bent knee. He looks like he is going to sit up, but never does. He holds this pose for several minutes as though posing for GQ Baby.
Waylon is still only scooching around, but he gets up on all fours a lot and rocks back and forth. I guess "real" crawling is coming soon.
Waylon bundles up for our evening Baby Boot Camp sessions. If only I could figure out how to get him to keep mittens on his hand. Aaron is sure he is going to get frost bite one of these chilly San Clemente evenings.
Waylon behind bars. The question remains, do the gates in our house exist to keep the beagles out or to keep Waylon in?
Waylon thinks Aaron is the funniest person in the world. He laughs all the time when daddy is around, and he finds sneezes, hiccups, and flying games especially hilarious.

Faces

The many faces of Waylon Frederick Davis...

Meeting Up With the Mahoneys

Waylon and I traveled to Carlsbad last week to visit the Mahoney Family during their vacation at Aviara. It was a great visit, and Waylon got to show off his scooching skills to a live audience. I loved catching up with Deeann and Kevin while Piper (17 months) and Riley (3 years) napped. Of course the fun really began when all 3 kids were awake at the same time. Definitely not like our days hanging out at UCSB!

Scooching Forward!!!

After several weeks of rolling side to side and scootching backwards, Waylon is finally moving forward! He is definitely not doing a traditional crawl--more of an inch-worm crossed with a breakdancer that had stroke. When he is scootching forward he looks like a scene out of an army movie where the hero has been shot and is bleeding to death, but is able to drag his lifeless body to safety by sheer willpower. We are so proud!

Sunday in the Burbs

I wouldn't say that life in a planned community with a 7.5 month old is exciting, but its surprisinly fun for us. We started today (Sunday 10/15) with a hearty breakfast from IHOP followed by a trip to Wal Mart for a new toy. We get so bored with Waylon's toys that Aaron and I get totally excited to get new stuff. I'm telling ya, I blinked and we are total suburbanites. Anyway, we spent the rest of the day playing with Waylon and watching him scootch forward. I am hoping to get some good photos of the scootching for a new post tomorrow (something exciting to look forward to!).

It is pretty funny that Aaron is constantly giving me "tips" on parenting such as how many toys are too many to have in Waylon's crib, or reminding me to keep dangerous items out of Waylon's reach. As you can see, Aaron was really showing off his parenting skills today while he was "watching" over Waylon. Maybe Aaron is trying to teach Waylon to nap better by example.
Another weekend, another new toy. Waylon had so much fun yesterday playing with new toys at all the different houses we visited, we just had to buy him more stuff to play with at home.

Ending the Lockdown

At the end of August, during a trip to Catalina, we were having a lot of problems with Waylon's napping and sleeping at night. I declared that we were never going to travel anywhere again so we could get him to sleep. Well, it worked and he sleeps pretty well now (although he's still not a great napper). We decided to end our self-imposed "lock down" in San Clemente and travel to Pasadena and LA on Saturday to visit several of Aaron's good friends, two of whom just had babies. It was GREAT to get out, but Waylon was definitley not stoked about trying to nap in new places. It will probably take us a few days to get back on track.

Waylon and Tyler Giddings (18 mos)
Tyler, Dan, and Kayla Giddings with Aaron and Waylon. Kayla is only 3 weeks old. It was amazing to hold her--I already am shocked that Waylon was ever that small. Kayla's mom, Cathy, is doing great--much better than I was 3 weeks after giving birth.
Waylon and Emma Hayden (1 year)
Shana and Grace (2.5 years) Hayden with Aaron and Waylon. Gotta love all those Davis chins. It was amazing to see how much bigger both Grace and Emma are since we saw them in April.
As you can see, Waylon was excited to meet Kari, Cecily (2 mos) and Charlotte (2.5 years) Rasmussen. Again, here is a mom that is doing fantastic after having a baby just 2 months ago. I think I was still living in my PJ's at this point. Also, if you look closely you'll see that Waylon changed clothes. He had a blowout, making cruising in LA traffic extra fun while he screamed his little lungs out.

Six (and a half) Month Portraits

We were a few weeks behind getting Waylon's six-month portraits so I present to you the 6.5 month portraits. I am late posting these because Sears screwed up the picture CD. Better late than never!

This professional picture session went better than last time. I scheduled it just after Waylon's morning nap and fed him literally minutes before we walked in. It seemed to pay off and Waylon was smiling at giggling in the lobby. However, once we got into the studio he started crying and was a fuss butt the whole time. Oh well, we'll try again next time.

Doesn't the photo collage just scream Sears Portrait Studio? Oh well, at least you can see most of the pictures in this one.Waylon refused to do his big smile the whole time and insisted on this smirk.

Grandma Patty Visits

My mom (aka Grandma Patty) had a long visit with Waylon today. She and her husband, Tom, have been at their property in Washington State all summer so my mom hasn't been able to see Waylon in person for quite awhile. She made the trek to San Clemente today from outside of Temecula where they are staying for a few weeks. Waylon was having a ball showing off his new moves, rolling, scooching backwards, and getting up on his hands & knees. Waylon has a bazillion toys, but he was able to entertain himself for at least 30 minutes playing with a plastic clothes hanger. It gave my mom and I a chance to let him play while we caught up.

Grandma and Waylon in tug-o-war over his play hammer.

Blast From the Past

Here is a picture of me at about Waylon's age. My brother, Fritz, is on the left and I'm on the right. I didn't have quite the mega-cheeks that Waylon has, but close.

All Sorts of Updates

Now that I am back at work its harder to do blog entries on each and every milestone that Waylon has, so here are a bunch of pictures and updates...

Waylon is getting bigger every day, and has started to get much more grown up with his playing. He can now sit up well and really focuses on his toys when he's playing.
This smiling face is a FAR cry from the Waylon that we saw for several days this week. He was super fussy and inconsolable beginning on Tuesday. However, he woke up this morning (Saturday 10/7) in a MUCH better mood--low and behold one of his top teeth had come through. Thank goodness our smiling little guy is back (and his smile will soon have even more teeth).
I broke down and bought a high chair for Waylon today. I was trying to avoid having another piece of baby gear in the house--but I have to admit its a lot easier to feed him in this contraption. You can also see Waylon's favorite toys in this picture...baking utensils!
Waylon is getting closer to crawling. However, this picture makes him look more advanced than he actually is. He only has gotten up on his knees a few times and usually falls immeditely on his face. I got this picture during the second or two before he fell.
Waylon loves banging things so Aaron thought a toy piano would be a good way to channel that energy (I know, I know--we will likely regret this purchase later). I also included this photo to show off Waylon's outfit that Aaron put together all by himself. Its really amazing that Aaron can do such a great job dressing our son, but he is so fashion impaired with his own outfits. Waylon was inspired by the new movie The Guardian, which is all about the Coast Guard. He decided to dress up like a Coastie himself. (Thanks to our favorite Coastie, Sid, for the adorable ensemble).

Catching Up With The Goodreaus

We were so excited to introduce Waylon to Stan, Holiday, and Olivia Goodreau on Thursday (10/5). They were in town for a very quick visit so we hit the beach and our favorite restaurant, El Mariachi. One of my first dates with Aaron was a double-date with Stan and Holiday. The four of us hung out quite a bit when we all lived in LA. It was a sad day for us when they moved to Denver so its always LOTS of talking and catching up when we're together. Of course this time it was a totally new experience to juggle our time together while taking care of our kids. I still haven't gotten over how different it is to try and go out to dinner, the beach, wherever... with kids. Its fun, but definitely a far cry from the long evenings we used to spend eating, drinking, and talking without interruption.

It is absolutely adorable to see Stan wrapped totally and completely around Olivia's little finger
Olivia was so cute running all around the beach. We were lucky to get her to stop long enough for this cute picture with her mom. Waylon couldn't keep up with Olivia, and just chilled on the beach. We were so sad to realize that we totally forgot to get a picture of Waylon and Olivia together.

Fun with the Fletchers

Waylon and I met up with Holden and Jenn Fletcher on Sunday at the Carlsbad Outlets. Its always fun to catch up and do some baby clothes shopping. Although Holden is about 23 hours younger than Waylon, he is WAY more advanced (actually he's more advanced than any seven-month-old that I know). He is crawling all over the place and pulling himself up. Once we let the boys out of their strollers for a photo session, Holden was off! Trying to get both boys together for a picture is like trying to herd cats For a split second Holden and Waylon both looked at the camera....
But not for long... Holden took off and Waylon could only sit, chew, and watch.
Jenn holds on to the babies for dear life. In case you didn't realize how huge Waylon's cheeks are--there is no denying it now.

Surfing Saturday

Waylon begged us to go watch the shredders at the longboard competition in Dana Point on Saturday. I think Aaron is inspired to actually use the longboard he got a few weeks after Waylon was born. We have no doubt that Bubba will be out there tearing up the waves in just a few years.
