Kowabunga Dude

Waylon shows off his extensive collection of Hawaiian shirts...

I love that I can dress Waylon in anything without protest these days...even jeans shorts
Serenity now!!!!
This is the smile that wraps me totally and completely around this little guy's finger

Starting Solids

Now that Waylon is six-months-old he has started solid foods (if you consider total mush to be "solid"). He is starting with rice cereal and we'll add a new delicacy each week. The good news is that Aaron has vowed to start eating veggies along with Waylon. Here are some pictures of his first experience eating, and I use the term "eating" very loosely...
The obligatory "before" shot...
The first bite--things dont seem too bad so far...
"You've got to be kidding me!!!" Waylon was clearly not a fan of rice cereal
Although very little got in his mouth, I managed to get a fairly significant amount up Waylon's nose.

Six Months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am (sort of) coming to peace with how much faster time seems to pass when you have a baby. That said, I must say WOW--they grow up so flippin' fast! It has been half-a-year since Waylon made his debut, and here are the key points: Still no calls to 911 (knock on wood), lots of rolling, some sitting up, and (drumroll.....) 2 teeth!!! Here are some updates:

The Pediatrician Appointment
On August 24, Waylon weighed in at 17 pounds, 4 ounces and is 27 inches. Despite every single person who sees him remarking what a "huge baby" we have, Waylon continues to be in the 50th percentile for weight, but has moved up to the 75th percentile for height. His world famous head is in the 50th percentile (I know, totally unbelievable!). Although they dont measure such things, we are certain that he is in the 99th percentile for cheek size. The doctor was very happy with his progress, and said that all is well. She expects him to be crawling by his next appointment at 9 months.

"Sleep Training"
When you read the articles & books on parenting they make it seem like there are only 2 ways to raise a baby. Either allowing the baby to "run the show" with the parents bowing to the child's every need, or forcing the baby onto a schedule to meet the parents needs. I dont know anyone that follows either of the methods exclusively (despite what the media infers). Aaron and I are no different, and are constantly figuring it out as we go--often vascillating back and forth in our methods.

We used to think it was cruel to allow Waylon to "cry it out" to go to sleep. However, for the past month we've had a harder and harder time getting him to go to sleep, and he was waking up from naps acting like he was still tired. At night Waylon was waking up more and more, and would cry until I would come in and replace the pacifier in his mouth. Thus, after reading several books, and coming up with a plan of attack, we finally started having Waylon "cry it out" until he falls asleep. In order to feel better about this, Aaron calls it sleep training. Its working pretty well, and we've only had a few times that we've felt like monsters. After just a few days, Waylon is sleeping more and seems less tired during the day. Please keep your fingers crossed that he continues to do well.

Video Geeks
The first time we let Waylon cry it out until he fell asleep, Aaron and I were complete basket cases, listening to the monitor wondering if every cry meant that he was in pain. Even worse, when it got quiet we wondered if he was asleep or had hurt himself. After about 20 minues of this agony, Aaron ordered a video monitor from Ebay. It just got here on Friday and as you can imagine our weekend has been spent watching Waylon roll around his crib. We are such dorks that we actually stood outside his door (where the reception is best) for 30 minutes last night just watching him play in his crib until he fell asleep. I know we are overprotective, but its brought me a lot of peace of mind, which I realize is priceless as a parent.

Waylon gets some help from daddy to learn the magic of standing up. (Doesn't Waylon look like Uncle Jesse from the Dukes of Hazard?!)
This is Waylon's newest facial expression. Aaron thinks its Waylon's "will you please get that camera out of my face?" look.
I think it will be quite awhile before Waylon earns a boy scout badge in knot tying. However, if they offer a badge for untying then he is a shoe in! On Friday, August 18, we felt (and saw) Waylon's first tooth--it was the lower left, front tooth. Two days later the second tooth appeared. We were pleasantly surprised that after months of drooling, chewing, and shark attacks from Waylon, the actually cutting of the teeth passed with relative ease. I realize you cant actually see the teeth in this picture, but for now Waylon is pretty shy about showing off his pearly whites.
Waylon and Aaron pose for a "fashion do & dont" picture. Can you guess which is which? Hint: I call Aaron's shorts the Greg Brady's.
If you look closely you'll see that I am holding Waylon extremely tightly, hoping to keep him small forever.

Super Star Babysitters

Aaron's mom, Josephine, has been Waylon's #1 babysitter and does a great job. However, last week Grandma Josephine was not available so Waylon got to experience his first non-relative babysitters--Amy and Kath Kelly. As usual, I was a bit worried that Waylon would freak out, so I showed up at Amy's place with a crib, a huge bag of toys, his exersaucer, and a diaper bag. Did I mention that I was going to be gone for less than 3 hours? Of course, Auntie Amy and Auntie Kath were fantastic with Waylon. Allegedly he didn't have any tantrums and they even got him to go down for a nap with no fussing (I am still trying to emulate that feat!). Needless to say, I was incredibly relieved and will no doubt be calling on their services again soon. Before the great babysitting experiment began, Suzanne Medeiros stopped by to meet Waylon as well. Waylon always loves to meet new aunties.

Amy, Kath, and Suz look very comfortable with the little munchkin. I think they may use this experience to try out for a part on Super NannyKath Kelly finally made it on the blog. Congrats to the unofficial number one blog fan!!!!

Bath Time is Fun Time

Waylon HATED his first few baths (see pics in the archives from March), but now he usually enjoys bath time and I cant get over how cute looks in his various hooded towels.Gotta keep him covered up for these pictures. The last thing I need is obsenity charges from the Feds.
Waylon embraces (literally) his Buddha belly
Bath is done, and now Waylon is excited because he knows dinner is next!
Our little monster.

Showing Off

Hey, I'm Waylon--look at me, I'm sitting up!...
This whole sitting up thing is pretty fun, just dont let me get distracted....

Mom, I told you not to let me get distracted!!!

Waylon in Jail

We used to use Waylon's Pack-n-Play as a baby-stuff storage area and changing table. However, since he became more mobile, we've started using the Pack-n-Play for its intended purpose--baby jail. Its a safe place for Waylon to chill out, roll around, and play with his toys while we get some things done around the house. A win-win situation!

A New Delicacy

Waylon will start eating solid foods in about 2 weeks, but until then he can enjoy this latest delicacy...his toes!

The Update

OK Waylon fans (and by fans I mean my mom), you've been clammoring for an update and here it is! Waylon is about 5 1/2 months and is seriously the cutest thing in the world. I know that by saying that I am asking for fate to further enlarge his head and keep his legs chunky, but he seriously is one cute little bugger. The books say this is the cutest time and I have to agree! He isn't very mobile (yet) but he can sure sit there with those giant cheeks and double-chin looking adorable.

Waylon's entire world revolves around trying to get every single thing within his grasp into his mouth. His hands, my clothes, the dogs...ANYTHING! Aaron thinks he will be a great football player because his head is constantly on a swivel looking for "prey" to attack and chew. We aren't sure if its due to the teething, but some nights he wakes up a lot. It also appears (not by looking at Waylon) that my milk supply is slowly diminishing due to stress, and this is probably contributing to his middle of the night wakings. Aaron got to spend his first night this weekend sleeping on the nursery floor--always a good nights sleep. Waylon also doesn't take to long naps, so I am usually racing around trying to get things done during his 45 minute cat naps. Otherwise things are good, and we are having fun. My number one concern is that our son will have ADHD because I spend all day moving him from toy to toy to tummy time to reading...and on and on... To say that he is the center of our world would be the understatement of the year.
Family ice cream time. Waylon is definitely ready to try solid foods. He is constantly watching us when we eat, and tries to grab our food (such a Strasburg!).
See what I mean? Totally cute!
Waylon LOVES his cube from Uncle Fritz and Kristina. He can really attack it and slobber all over the whole thing. By the way, we call this "outfit" his K Fed look--very classy.
Moving in for the kill.
Cuter than a duck's butt! How much do you want to bite those chunky legs?!

Daddy's Boy

As I was going through the most recent photos I found a lot of cute Daddy & Waylon pictures. I guess you can guess who usually takes the pictures. Actually, since Waylon started teething he isn't sleeping as well and I dont feel particularly "photogenic" these days...
